Two Grenada companies receive energy efficiency grants08/10/2010 |
Grenada, Miss. (August 9, 2010) – The Grenada County Economic Development District announced today that two of Grenada’s largest employers have been awarded grants by the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) as part of the second round of the Mississippi Job Protection through Energy Economic Development Program. Part of the State Energy Program (SEP) funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), the Job Protection Program allocated $5.31 million to eligible companies in Mississippi. Abitibi Bowater and Luvata received $325,000.00 and $50,000.00 respectively.
“Grenada companies recognize that energy efficiency can make them more productive and help them save money by reducing cost,” said Pablo Diaz, Executive Director of the EDD. “We celebrate that not one, but two of the Grenada applications were awarded funds, and pledge to continue to work closely with existing companies to assure they know about, and take advantage of this type of opportunities in the future.”
Wade Taylor, general manager for AbitibiBowater added, “We are excited to receive grant funding to help implement additional energy efficient initiatives within our plant. One of our values is to ensure sustainability in all aspects of our business, and this opportunity is certainly consistent with that value. The energy savings that will result from the improvements will definitely make a difference in our ability to preserve jobs in the Grenada area.”
Under the Job Protection Program Mississippi companies will be able to install energy-efficient retrofits, such as lighting, HVAC, industrial systems and other items, yielding significant energy and cost savings. The goal of the program is to help companies become more productive and save jobs through energy efficiency.
